SIMBIOS

SIMBIOS is a multidisciplinary research team working on complex ecological & environmental issues based at the University of Abertay Dundee.

SIMBIOS staff use modelling & experimental approaches to examine a wide range of fundamental and applied questions that impact on daily life on the planet.

Currently, SIMBIOS operate two state-of-the-art ICT systems. Both operate using X-ray tomography processing, used to capture 3d internal structures and predict complex processes on-going within structures. These systems are the best x-ray tomography scanners in the world, combined with a strong gaming industry at the University of Abertay Dundee they have been able to develop unique and powerful software that manipulates and interrogates complex 3D datasets. The technology and expertise can be applied to various industries such as manufacturing, biotech, construction and agriculture.

Some of SIMBIOS current projects include

  • Spatio-temporal analysis of soil-microbe interactions.
  • Developing hardware and software to detect decay in teeth.
  • Analysis of metallic foams
  • Analysis of termite mounds in relation to Rapid Manufacturing.
  • Decay of carbon deposits.
  • Fungal intrusion in wood.
  • Analysis of carbon filters for Fuel Cell development.
  • Microbially induced calcite (natural cements) in porous media.
  • Hospital acquired infections
