Event summary

Funding business research and development is often prohibitively expensive. This event looks at the various methods that can ease the cost of R&D.

Jamie Henderson (Manager, Innovation Portal)

An Introduction and overview of the Innovation Portal and the Small Grants Scheme.

Neil Stewart (Tayside Knowledge Transfer Partnerships Centre)

KTP projects are delivered by an Associate working within the host company under the supervision of a relevant academic expert. Typical projects include new product development, process improvement and software development by creating solutions to existing problems. Project costs are grant funded at a level of 67% for SMEs. Neil also discussed European funding opportunities, and in particular, the 7th Framework Programme (FP7).

Dr Louise Morrison (Scottish Government)

There have been a number of high profile SMART awards within Tayside in previous years. Louise presented two forms of this government funded initiative, the application process and what it has to offer to Tayside business.

Dr Mohammed Elharam (Whole Life Consultants Ltd)

Whole Life Consultants Ltd is a University of Dundee spin-out company dedicated to continuously improving the whole life performance of the construction industry. The company recently obtained a SMART award to develop the cutting edge Whole Life Cost Estimator software.

James Stewart (Johnston Carmichael)

Research and Development tax credit is a company tax relief which is available to SMEs but often remains unclaimed.  A successful claim will result in a reduction in a company’s tax bill or provide a cash sum.

Ken Ingram (Discovery Investment Fund Ltd)

Discovery Investment Fund Ltd was created to bring together a small syndicate of local angel investors. DIFL are Scottish Enterprise Co-investment partners with a keen interest in assisting and supporting start ups and SME’s in Scotland.

Feedback Summary

We asked the attendees of the Grant Funding for Innovation event for their feedback. The overall impression of the event was that it was very good and the majority of the attendees felt that the event had highlighted significant areas for development.

  • 40% rated the event as excellent, 50% of attendees rated the event very good
  • 55% of attendees said they would consider working with academia
  • 70% of attendees said that the event highlighted areas for development. Suggestions for future topics included, Innovation for business start ups.
